Last week with Ulf, near Sälen, about halfway ¨up¨ Sweden, and 25 kilometers from the Norwegian border, I finally experienced real Scandinavian snow (and put the Sorels and skis to good use).  It was spectacular.

That's noble
One of my great pleasures of the last couple months (besides saying, “President-elect Obama,” over and over) has been watching Paul Krugman call out George Bush and George Will on their bullshit with — oooh! — true facts, all the while teaching us something about how economies really operate.  You mean, free market forces aren’t the holy writ!?!  Another great...

Local delicacy
Sweden is generally rather clean and fresh in character and smell.  Pine-scented forests, crisp Baltic and Nordic sea breezes, and the cosy-spicy aroma of baking pepparkakor (ginger cookies), are just a few typically Swedish things.  Yet, two of Sweden’s oddest national dishes have a horrible stench: surströmming (literally, rotten fermented herring) and Gothenburg metal (a.k.a. Melodic...

Ay ay ay!
julie911: President Elect Obama gives his 3rd news conference in 3 days to reassure nervous consumers and financial markets that “help is on the way” for the economy, while the actual President, pardons a turkey.

Here’s the awesome djurpark in Göteborg’s Slottsskogen, where I got to rub shoulders with a certain very cool mountain sheep.  It seems like every city park in Sweden has its own spacious djurpark — a sort of petting zoo featuring domestic and “heirloom-domestic” species (as opposed to exotic species) in an environment that approximates a cozy Dolittle ranch on the...

Happy Birthday from Sweden!
In today’s mail I received a kind offer from the Swedish government for a gynecologic exam on my birthday!  Actually, it wasn’t an offer per se, but a notice to be there (for my surprise?) at 8:00 a.m. on November 17th. I never told Sweden that I’d like to be probed with a vaginal speculum for my birthday.  How did Sweden ever guess?!  It was just my second piece of official...

A fascinating TED lecture by Sweden’s Hans Rosling, Professor of International Health, on how good design will liberate data, so that data can run free and save lives… he says it much better than I’m doing.  Just watch it.  It’s awesome.
